TT 2026: Paton wins the first Sportbike TT in history
Every June, the Isle of Man once again becomes the ultimate temple of road racing. Sixty kilometres of asphalt, stone walls, jumps, blind corners and high-speed straights turn the Mountain Course into the most demanding proving ground in the world. At the 2026 edition, Moto Paton wrote another page of history: the Paton S1-R claimed victory in the new Sportbike category at the Tourist Trophy, once again confirming itself as the technical and sporting benchmark among lightweight twins.
Michael Dunlop’s dominance
Riding the MD Racing Paton S1-R, Michael Dunlop won the Carole Nash Sportbike TT Race 1 with a commanding, authoritative and flawless performance. The Northern Irish champion imposed his pace from the very first sectors of the course, building a decisive margin lap after lap and crossing the line 28.775 seconds ahead of Mike Browne.
For Dunlop, this marked his 36th overall victory at the Tourist Trophy, further strengthening his status as the most successful rider in the history of the Isle of Man TT. For Paton, it represents a new chapter in a story that began with its Lightweight and Supertwin triumphs and now continues into the new Sportbike era. Following the series of victories achieved between 2017 and 2025, the 2026 win brings the Paton S1-R’s tally to 11 TT victories across the Lightweight, Supertwin and Sportbike categories.
A record in the new category
The success was not defined by victory alone, but also by the numbers. Dunlop completed the two-lap race in 36’29”328, setting the benchmark for the new Sportbike TT and recording the fastest lap at an average speed of 124.530 mph. It was an extraordinary figure, taking the Paton S1-R into a new performance dimension and confirming the strength of the technical project even through the regulatory transition from Supertwin to Sportbike.
The 2026 Sportbike TT marked the beginning of a new phase for the category: the Supertwin machines that had already starred in previous years remained eligible, now joined by new middleweight Sportbike machinery. In this more open and competitive scenario, the Paton S1-R responded in the clearest possible way: by winning.
The strength of the other Patons on the grid
Moto Paton’s result was not limited to Michael Dunlop’s victory. The presence of several S1-R machines on the grid once again confirmed the solidity of the project and the trust placed in the bike by teams and riders.
Mike Browne completed an outstanding Paton one-two by finishing second on the Melbray/Laycock Racing S1-R, after a close battle with Paul Jordan. Jamie Coward brought another Paton into the top five, finishing fifth on the Milenco by Padgett’s Motorcycles S1-R. David Johnson finished 12th, Andrea Majola 14th, Rob Hodson 21st and Masayuki Yamanaka 33rd on the Paton S1-R-650 T-Bike.
Seven Patons at the finish, two in the top two positions and three in the top five: numbers that speak louder than words about the competitiveness of a motorcycle capable of adapting, evolving and continuing to win on the most difficult circuit in the world.
A story that continues
Since its official return to the TT, the Paton S1-R has built a unique reputation: victories, podiums, records and a constant presence at the sharp end of the classification. Success in the first Sportbike TT in history is more than just another win: it is confirmation that Paton’s technical philosophy, built on balance, precision, reliability and artisanal passion, continues to prove successful in the face of new rules and new rivals.
The 2026 Tourist Trophy therefore leaves history with another image destined to endure: Michael Dunlop on the top step of the podium, the Paton S1-R ahead of everyone, and the Paton name once again engraved among the great protagonists of the Isle of Man.
